What Are The Different Types Of Mesothelioma?

Most cases of Mesothelioma, approximately 75%, start in the chest cavity. These types of Mesothelioma are called Pleural Mesotheliomas.  The second most common form of Mesothelioma, comprising 10% to 20% of Mesothelioma cases, begins in the abdominal cavity.  These are called Peritoneal Mesotheliomas.  Other places where Mesothelioma may form, although very rarely, is around the heart (Pericardium Mesothelioma) and around the male (Tunica Vaginalis Testis Mesothelioma) and female (Tunica Serosa Uteri Mesothelioma) reproductive organs.

What Are The Different Types of Mesothelium?

To better and more directly categorize the location of the organ surrounded by the Mesothelium Membrane, Mesothelium is commonly referred to in the medical profession by several different names in order to accurately identify the location of the Mesothelium within the body.  The following are the various names used to identify the location of the Mesothelium within the body:

  • Peritoneum describes the Mesothelium membrane that covers most of the organs in the abdominal cavity;
  • Pleura describes the Mesothelium membrane surrounding the lungs and lining the wall of the chest cavity;
  • Pericardium describes the Mesothelium membrane surrounding the heart;
  • Tunica vaginalis testis describes the Mesothelium membrane surrounding the male internal reproductive organs; and
  • Tunica serosa uteri describes the Mesothelium membrane surrounding the internal reproductive organs in women.

What Is The Mesothelium?

Mesothelioma was described in yesterday's post as being cancer of the Mesothelium.  The description obviously baits the question, what is the Mesothelium? The Mesothelium is a protective membrane that surrounds most of the internal organs of the body like a double layered sack.  One layer of the Mesothelium, the inner layer, immediately surrounds the organ and a second outer layer surrounds the inner one.  The Mesothelium creates a lubricating fluid that is released between the inner and outer layers.  While the outer and inner layers of the Mesothelium provide a protective covering for the organ, the lubricating fluid inside the layers allow moving organs (like the expanding and contracting lungs or the beating heart) to slide easily against adjacent organs, muscles and tissue.

What Is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is the term used to describe cancer of the Mesothelium.  This occurs when the cells of the Mesothelium contract a disease which causes the cells of the Mesothelium to become abnormal and to divide without control or order.  This abnormal cell division caused by Mesothelioma can result in the abnormal cells created by the disease invading and damaging nearby tissues and organs.  This invasion by the diseased Mesothelioma cells can cause the cancer to spread from the original site to other parts of the parts of the body.  When the cancer spreads through the body in this manner, it is commonly referred to having metastasized.
